How it works

What native integration actually means.

Most 3PLs treat integration as an afterthought. We treat it as the foundation. Here's the technical reality.

01

Direct API connection

ShipHero WMS connects to your platform's official API. Not middleware, not a third-party connector, not a CSV upload — direct API integration with sub-second order flow.

02

Real-time order import

Orders appear in the picking queue within seconds of customer checkout. Pickers can start working an order while the confirmation email is still sending.

03

Bi-directional inventory sync

When inventory ships, all connected sales channels update simultaneously. When inbound receives, all channels see the new available-to-sell stock. No overselling.

04

Tracking push-back

When a label generates, tracking pushes back to your platform immediately. Customer confirmation emails go out within minutes of pack completion.

05

Multi-channel routing

One inventory pool serves all connected channels. Channel-specific routing rules (packout, carrier, SLA) handled per-order based on source channel.

06

Custom field propagation

Gift messages, delivery instructions, personalization fields — all custom checkout data flows from platform to pick ticket to packer instructions.

Don't see your platform?

If your platform has an API, we can almost certainly integrate. ShipHero WMS supports REST API, webhooks, FTP, and custom EDI mappings. Custom integrations are quoted separately.

Why this matters

Why native integration beats middleware.

Sub-second order flow

Native API integration means orders appear in our WMS within seconds. Middleware (Zapier-style connectors, CSV uploads) introduces 5-60 minute delays that compound over high-volume days.

Real-time inventory accuracy

Bi-directional sync prevents overselling. Middleware-based syncs operate on schedules; native sync is continuous. The difference matters during sales events and viral product spikes.

No middleware subscription fees

Native integrations are included in our standard software management fee. Middleware connectors typically cost $50-$500/month extra per platform.

Custom fields propagate cleanly

Native integration carries custom checkout fields (gift messages, delivery instructions, personalization) through to pick tickets. Middleware often loses or normalizes away custom data.

Fewer breaking points

Middleware adds a service that can fail independently. Native API has fewer moving parts and fewer 3 AM phone calls about why orders aren't syncing.

Platform-specific feature support

Native integrations support platform-specific features (Shopify Plus multi-store, Amazon SFP, Walmart EDI). Middleware typically normalizes to a lowest-common-denominator order format.

EDI & retail

EDI integration for retail compliance.

B2B and wholesale fulfillment requires EDI integration with retailers. We handle the EDI document flow that retail compliance requires.

EDI 850 — Purchase Order

Retailer POs flow into our WMS via SPS Commerce EDI or direct EDI integration. Order picked, packed, and shipped per routing guide.

EDI 856 — ASN

Advance Shipping Notice transmitted to retailer within required window. Carton-level detail with SCC barcodes. Required by Walmart, Target, Whole Foods, and most major retailers.

EDI 810 — Invoice

Invoice transmitted to retailer per their payment terms. Three-way match (PO + ASN + invoice) for retailer AP processing.

EDI 940 — Warehouse Ship Order

For drop-ship vendor (DSV) relationships where retailer routes shipment requests to us directly. Common with Nordstrom, Sephora, REI.

FAQ
How does platform integration actually work?
ShipHero WMS connects to your ecommerce platform via official API. For native integrations (Shopify, Amazon, Walmart, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, etc.) setup takes 1-2 hours during onboarding. Orders flow into the picking queue in real-time and inventory updates push back across all connected channels continuously.
Is there an additional fee for integration setup?
Native integrations are included in the standard software management fee. Custom integrations (rare platforms requiring custom development) are quoted separately. Most brands use only native integrations.
Can I connect multiple sales channels simultaneously?
Yes. Multi-channel is the default for most modern brands. One inventory pool serves Shopify DTC, Amazon FBM, Walmart Marketplace, TikTok Shop, and any other connected channels. Real-time sync across all eliminates overselling.
What if my platform is not natively supported?
Two options. First, ShipStation supports 100+ platforms and acts as a bridge to our WMS. Second, our WMS has a REST API, webhooks, and FTP support for custom integration. We can typically integrate any platform that has an API.
How fast does inventory sync?
Real-time — within seconds of an order shipping, all connected sales channels reflect the updated inventory. No batch syncs, no nightly delays, no manual reconciliation. Critical for preventing overselling on viral or sale events.
Do you support EDI for major retailers?
Yes. SPS Commerce EDI integration handles most major retailers (Walmart, Target, Whole Foods, Kroger, CVS, Walgreens, and many more). Direct EDI integration also available for retailers requiring it. Standard EDI documents supported: 850 (PO), 856 (ASN), 810 (invoice), 940 (warehouse ship order).
