Pre-built kits, on-demand kits, gift sets, subscription box assembly, multi-pack bundles. Done correctly, photographed, and tracked as their own SKUs in your WMS.
Kitting can mean many things — a 3-piece skincare set, a 12-pack subscription box, a custom influencer mailer, a Costco-style bundle. Here's how we handle each.
You send us the kit recipe — which component SKUs go in, in what quantity, with what packout. We build the kit as its own master SKU in the WMS with a defined Bill of Materials.
For predictable kits — gift sets, multi-packs, subscription boxes — we assemble in bulk in advance during off-peak hours. Faster pick speed, lower per-order cost, photographed before storage.
For custom kits — variable component combinations, personalized inserts, made-to-order influencer mailers — we assemble at pick time. Slower per order, but no waste if demand changes.
Every kit deducts its components from inventory. If a kit uses 3 SKUs, your inventory dashboard shows 3 SKUs going down as kits ship. Component shortages auto-flag before they affect kit availability.
Every kit configuration is photographed during initial build and stored in your account. Reference for QC, helpful for marketing teams who need product photos, useful in customer service when someone claims their kit was wrong.
Kits often need different packout than standalone products — gift wrap, theme tissue, branded insert cards, magnetic closure boxes. Configurable per kit SKU.
Most 3PLs treat kitting as "add this to the picking workflow." The reality is component tracking, kit-specific packout, photographic QC, and shortage prevention are real operational disciplines that affect every kit you ship.
Every kit SKU has a defined BOM in ShipHero. Component inventory deducts automatically. No manual reconciliation, no "we ran out of an ingredient mid-kit" surprises.
Some kits should be pre-built (high volume, stable recipe). Others should be on-demand (variable, custom, low volume). We help you decide which is which based on your actual demand pattern.
Component-level inventory means we can forecast a stockout 30 days out, not just when the kit runs to zero. Reorder lead times matter — you don't want to find out you're out of one ingredient when 500 orders are queued.
Every kit configuration photographed at first build. Reference for pickers, packers, QC, customer service. Reduces "this isn't what I ordered" complaints by 40-60%.
Gift wrap, branded insert cards, theme tissue, magnetic boxes — all stored as kit-specific packout. Standard kit ships in its proper presentation without packer judgment.
Once a kit is built and stored, it picks and ships as a single SKU. No multi-line pick for a 12-component kit at order time — it's one bin, one scan, one pack.
Skincare routines, makeup kits, holiday collections. High-volume pre-built kits with branded packout.
Monthly theme box assembly. New recipe each month, predictable volume, cohort-aligned shipping cycles.
Custom one-off kits for influencer seeding. On-demand assembly, photographed for marketing reference, personalized with handwritten notes.
Bundling individual units into multi-packs for FBA. Often required as FBA prep step before shipment to Amazon.
Gifts assembled with main products for specific promotional windows. Conditional assembly logic — only orders meeting criteria get the gift.
Kickstarter and Indiegogo rewards often involve multi-component tiers. Each tier is a distinct kit SKU.
Kitting priced per kit assembled. Simple 2-3 component kits run $0.50-$1.00/kit. Complex 5-10 component kits with branded packout run $1.00-$3.00/kit. Subscription box assembly often quoted as a flat per-box rate. Special projects $40/hr.
Every line item itemized. ACH/wire billing.
